[KoreaHerald]Asian cultures to converge at festival
The second “Asia Culture Festival” will take place at Pyounghwa Plaza in World Cup Park in Mapo-gu, central Seoul, on Sunday.

Hosted by the Asia Culture Festival Organizing Committee and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, the annual festival started last year under the theme “One Asia.”

By providing a venue to experience different Asian cultures, arts and traditions at the same time, the festival aims to eliminate prejudices and improve understanding of neighboring countries.

“This will be a festival where you can feel both Asian traditional cultures and contemporary cultures. It will be an opportunity to quench your thirst for better cultural understandings,” said Rep. Yu Jeong-hyun of the Grand National Party who is the head of the Asia Culture Festival Organizing Committee.

Seventeen Asian countries are participating in the festival this year, including Thailand, Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan, Nepal, China, Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Malaysia, India and Korea.

Various events will be held at the festival, starting with the “Asia Culture Stage” in which each participating country will throw a performance featuring their traditional dances, musical instruments and songs.

The following show, “Asia Pop Concert,” is expected to heat up the festival as it will feature some of Asia’s most popular young singers. Holladang, a Korean hip-hop group, will open the stage with “One Asia,” the festival’s theme song and performances by Joanna Ampil from Philippines, Tzbasa from Japan, Amal Perera from Sri Lanka, Sabin Rai from Nepal and Younha from Korea will follow.

An “Asian Village,” composed of booths representing each country, will be set up at the opposite end of the main stage. Visitors will be able to try on traditional costumes, games and learn how to make traditional crafts of the participating countries.

“Asia Mind Map,” an art project for which visitors can draw, paint and write their thoughts on multiculturalism on a large canvas, will be underway at the center of the World Cup Park during the festival as well. Visitors can also leave friendly messages to their neighboring Asians on the “One Asia Hope Message Board” which will be installed near the art project zone.

The festival runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday at World Cup Park in Mapo-gu, central Seoul. For more information, call (070) 7710-2904 or visit www.oneasia.co.kr.
